The Maple design is a woodcut that exploits colour, paper texture and natural vertical grain of the wood to render a sense of agility and liveliness which mimics the autumnal surrender of the maple leaf falling from its branch.
Capturing the energetic flurry of the moment of leaf fall, this piece was drawn freehand onto the block, before being sympathetically carved with a ‘hangi-to’ – a precision woodcut knife. Colour was applied deftly in one printing and mixed on the block, respectfully acknowledging the immediacy and irrevocability of leaf fall.
